About Me:

Luftbrucke is the name of the solo-project of Elia Mercanzin, a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Padua, northern Italy.

After a ten-years experience as rock drummer, in 2002 he kicked-off his solo-project, creating and developing a low cost analog-digital creative environment in his own flat’s privacy, spreading his works as free downloadable files.

He chose “Luftbrucke” as his stage name in August 2003, drawing inspiration by the atmosphere of rebirth he was surrounded by during his stay in Berlin.

Soon after his debut work, “Scratch the surface”, which can be defined a sort of “break-the-ice” experience, Luftbrucke collected a bunch of musicians and started creating his on-stage live dimension.

The following self-produced album releases, “From November to October” (2004) and “Ego te absolvo” (2006), testify an improvement of his creative approach and producing skills.

In 2007 Luftbrucke abandons classic album approach, producing and releasing single songs, temporarely collected by a constantly-in-progress EP, tentatively named “Forma mentis”.

“Forma mentis” can be seen as a log of current Luftbrucke’s musical journey, tracking the drift towards full italian lyrics and towards an even more multifaceted way of composing, in terms of atmospheres and arrangements.

Style

A dark-post-rock general attitude, a funky rhythmic approach, electropop-electroclash gradients, ambient retrò-vintage acoustic tunes, analog synth sounds and harsh guitars: Luftbrucke’s style cannot be classified so easily… Luftbrucke sings and plays live conventional rock instruments such as bass and guitar mixing them with a variety of computer based sequences, softsynths and sampled live drums loops.

Lyrically, at the beginning Luftbrucke started writing in English only, paying instinctive homage to his main musical influences. Gradually, from the 2004 “From november to october” album, italian lyrics have been growing in number, revealing the need to to express feelings, experiences and thoughts directly, with no language intermediate filters.

Luftbrucke è il nome del progetto solista di Elia Mercanzin, 1973, cantautore polistrumentista autodidatta.

Dopo dieci anni da batterista rock, nel 2002, esaurita l’ormai frustrante esperienza da musicista cover e deluso dall’impossibilità di realizzare in gruppo musica originale che realmente riflettesse le sue influenze musicali, decide di dedicarsi all’espressione della propria creatività in totale autonomia grazie all’HD recording.
Il desiderio di sperimentare, di esprimersi, di raccogliere i tumulti interiori di una fase di vita “reale” che stava implodendo, hanno alimentato in maniera quasi compulsiva questa inedita dimensione da cantautore.

Dopo aver rotto il ghiaccio con la pubblicazione nel 2003 di “Scratch the surface”, la primissima raccolta di brani totalmente autoprodotti, ha cominciato a costruire la propria band di supporto live recrutando musicisti di varia estrazione e provenienza.

Ciò che agli occhi di conoscenti e amici doveva essere una specie di divertissement fine a se stesso, di passatempo per un ex-musicista di provincia, aveva assunto invece compiutamente i tratti concreti di una proposta musicale di qualità in grado di uscire dall’appartamento in cui è stata concepita.

Le produzione successive sono “From November to October” (2004) e Ego te absolvo (2006), quest’ultimo progetto musicale-fotografico (vedi minisito dedicato).

Sempre nel 2006, il progetto Luftbrucke approda alla finale nord-est del contest Rock Targato Italia.
Nel corso del 2007 e proseguendo nel 2008, Luftbrucke abbandona il classico format della raccolta, alimentando di volta in volta, con l’aggiunta di nuovi brani, un EP in costante evoluzione denominato “Forma mentis“.
Musica
Come denominatore comune c’è un attitudine indiscutibilmente rock, oscura ed intimista che si concretizza di volta in volta sotto forme diverse che vanno dal post-rock futurista venato di funk ed elettronica fino ad atmosfere electroclash ed episodi minimal-acustici.
Costante è in ogni caso l’amore per la melodia, l’espressione diretta delle impressioni del momento ed il fuggire spontaneo dalle sonorità del panorama indie o da qualsivolgia schema preconfezionato.

Scrive i testi in inglese ed italiano.
Luftbrucke, a parte qualche fruttuosa collaborazione con il chitarrista Pi! (suo compagno di avventura nel progetto parallelo Mood Machine) e qualche featuring con voci femminili, canta e registra in autonomia basso e chitarre affidando alla tecnologia le restanti parti strumentali.
