Help Africa - URGENT!!

Proprio adesso, una proposta geniale è nella pentola della Commissione Europea: dare €1 miliardo rimasto dal budget del 2008 – in buona parte sussidi per l’agricoltura non spesi – ai coltivatori africani.

Questa è un occasione eccezionale per dare i soldi giusti alle persone giuste al momento giusto. Portare avanti la proposta, però, potrebbe essere difficile. Ci vuole una mano.

I capi europei si riuniscono a Brusselles il 15 ottobre. Avranno un agenda piena con i problemi finanziari attuali, ma è importante che diano una spinta a questa proposta. Possiamo aiutare con una petizione al Presidente Frances Sarkozy, attuale presidente del Consiglio Europeo, chiedendogli di spingere per l’approvazione di questa proposta.

Il “World Bank” ha stimato che la crescita nell'agricoltura è due volte più efficace nel ridurre la povertà della crescita in altri settori. Questa crescita serve soprattutto per aiutare i piccoli contadini, la maggior parte dei quali sono donne, che sono colpiti maggiormente dagli aumenti dei prezzi del cibo e del carburante. Poichè il Summit delle UN non ha dato una risposta completa a questo bisogno diventa ancora più importante che i capi europei prendino questa occasione per aiutare i contadini ad essere più auto-sufficienti in questi tempi di incertezze economiche.

La riunione dell'EU il 15 ottobre è solamente il primo passo. la decisione definitiva non arriverà prima dei primi giorni di dicembre. Ma questo è un momento chiave per i capi per dare una spinta alla proposta.

Right now, a brilliant proposal is brewing in the European Commission: give €1 billion left over from the 2008 budget - lots of it unspent agricultural subsidy money - to African farmers.

This is an exceptional opportunity to give the right money to the right people at the right time. Moving the proposal forward, however, may prove difficult. This is where we come in.

European leaders are gathering in Brussels on 15 October. They’ll have a full schedule with the financial turmoil, but it’s crucial that they also provide momentum to this proposal. We can help by petitioning French President Sarkozy, who is currently presiding over the European Council, to take the lead in approving the €1 billion proposal.

The World Bank estimates that growth in agriculture is twice as effective at reducing poverty as growth in other sectors. This growth is most needed to help smallholder farmers, the majority of whom are women, who are being hit hardest by soaring food and fuel prices. Since the UN Summit last month didn’t fully answer this need, it is especially important that European leaders pounce on this opportunity to help farmers help themselves in this time of economic uncertainty.

The EU meeting on 15 October is only the first step. The final decision won’t come until early December. But this is a key moment for leaders to give the proposal some momentum.
